Author: SMITH, Caleb B. Title: Speech of Mr. Caleb B. Smith, of Indiana, on the War and Its Cost. Delivered in the House of Representatives of the U. States, February 3, 1848
Description: Washington, DC, J. & G.S. Gideon, 1848. Paperback. 8vo. Wrappers. 16pp. Very good. Almost rates "Near fine," as it's tight and handsome, with just a hint of age toning (outer wrappers only) and binding traces along margin; contemporary "7" in brown ink at upper right of front page. A nice first edition of this speech by Abraham Lincoln's future Secretary of the Interior (1808-64), at this time a junior Hoosier congressman. Sharp criticism of the Mexican-American War, largely from a financial perspective. "We cannot shut our eyes to the alarming dangers of the career of conquest upon which we have entered," he admonishes. ""If it shall not be arrested, it must be fatal to our Union. The denationalization of Mexico, and its annexation to this Republic, would be destructive of our Government.." SABIN 82372. .
