Author: GARNER, James W. (editor) Title: Addresses Delivered on the Occasion of the Celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Birth of Stephen A. Douglas
Description: N.p. State of Illinois, 1915. Hardcover. 8vo. Green cloth with gilt lettering. 125pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Very good. A tight and quite attractive first edition, with gilt gleaming -- and an intriguing copy, for the front flyleaf is boldly inscribed in black ink: "Sarah Bond Hanley / To / Adlai E. Stevenson II / December 18, 1951." Hanley (1865-1959) was an Illinois state legislator active in Democratic politics and chairman of the 1930 Democratic State Convention in 1930, and Stevenson (1900-65) was of course the Illinois governor who at this time was being spoken of as the next Democratic presidential candidate -- which happened the following year and again in 1956, though he lost both times to Dwight D. Eisenhower. An interesting association copy, for Stevenson's grandfather, Adlai E. Stevenson I (1835-1914, vice president under Cleveland) contributes one lengthy chapter and is pictured in this volume, and his great-grandfather Jesse Fell was a friend and colleague of Douglas's opponent, Abraham Lincoln. .
