Author: (CALIFORNIA / GOLD MINE) Title: Printed Document Signed
Description: Indianapolis, IN, N.p. 1871. Printed DS, 1p, 9½" X 5½", Indianapolis, IN, 1871 December 15. Very good. Stock certificate for ten shares at a cost of $500.00 in this Butte County, California, mine, chartered in Indiana in 1866 and lasting until 1898. Signed at lower right by its first president, Abraham Washington Hendricks (1822-87) and issued to a Thomas G. Barry. Printed in a variety of ornate typefaces, this certificate bears a blue George Washington internal revenue 25-cent stamp at lower left. It has been cancelled with the usual "X" slash at center and with red rules. An attractive example. The first placer mines were begun at this camp in 1849, at the outset of the California Gold Rush, by a group of Oregonians -- hence the name -- who were successful in the region. .
