He was a test pilot, stunt man and wanna-bee adventurer a la Amelia Earhart who achieved a bit of reknown in the 1930s and milked it for all it was worth for a short-lived 1935 radio program, "The Diary of Jimmy Mattern," for a Chicago-based oil company. .
