Jacket edgeworn, with archivally closed (on verso) edge tear; small circular blind-embossed ownership imprint on title page. A tight and attractive much later (ca. late 1970s-early '80s) printing of this Modern Library Giant (#40), first published in 1938 -- with a nice autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a fine 4½" X 3" slip on which Poe's introducer boldly pens: "with all Cordial Regards, / Hervey Allen / 19 Savage St. / Charleston, S.C. / January 1924." Allen (1889-1949) is a novelist best known for his 1933 bestseller "Anthony Adverse," but in 1926 he wrote "Israfel," a biography of Poe. .
