Author: SCOTT, James K.P. Title: The Story of the Battles at Gettysburg
Description: Harrisburg, PA, The Telegraph Press, 1927. Hardcover. 8vo. Red buckram with gilt lettering, pictorial dust jacket. xi, 301pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, maps. Very good/good plus. Jacket edgeworn and a bit rubbed, with spine sunned; inner hinge starting but expertly, archivally and discreetly strengthened, thus tight. An attractive first edition by this colonel with the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry -- "A survivor," notes the title page, "of a regiment with a monument on the base-line of the defense at the Angle, with its name inscribed on the pedestal at the High Water Mark." Warren W. Hassler Jr. gives it this mixed review: "A rambling, poorly organized yet accurate story of the first day's fight at Gettysburg, with maps and terrain photographs." Interesting nonauthorial gift inscription on front flyleaf reads: "To / Carl Tolpo / Creator of Barrington's / Lincoln Sculpture / with kindest regards / John HD Blanke / village trustee / Barrington Ill / Dec. 16, 1958." Carl Tolpo (1901-76) was a noted sculptor and painter best remembered for his Lincoln statuary; a resident of Barrington at this time, his Lincoln statue stands on the grounds of Barrington High School.
