Burgundy leatherette spine and burgundy clother over boards with gilt lettering and decorations, pictorial dust jacket. xix, 272pp. Top edge gilt. Extensive illustrations, pictorial endpapers. Near fine/very good. Mild jacket edgewear, with single chip at tail of spine. A tight, handsome first edition of this pictorial celebration of the sites of this northwest Illinois community. A large number of local luminaries contribute the descriptive text that faces each image, with their signatures reproduced. This copy bears a unique autograph addition: Koenig died in 1964, but this copy bears a fine presentation inscription in blue ballpoint on an inner flyleaf -- "To Lily Tolpo / A dear friend / Bill & Alice Koenig / Anna Belle Nimmo / Aug. 1995." Bill Koenig and Anna Belle Koenig Nimmo (born 1923) are Koenig's children, and Lily Tolpo (1917-2015) was a noted sculptor who in recent years sculpted Freeport's life-size Lincoln and Douglas Debate monument. Laid in are two heavy stock 5" X 3" card with some inked notes by Tolpo about Freeport and Lincoln, and also a color postcard depicting "Whoofle Koenig, the Magic Dragon," a large sculpture by Tolpo given to the city of Freeport by Anna Belle Koenig Nimmo. .
