This handsome General Order, titled "Exchange of Prisoners of War," announces that "The following prisoners of war, received and delivered at Rough and Ready, Georgia, the 19th, 22d, 28th, and 30th days of September, 1864, in pursuance of an agreement between Major General W.T. SHERMAN, U.S. Army, and General Hood, are declared duly exchanged.." -- followed by large numbers of Union commissioned officers, non-commissioned officers and privates (totaling 1128 soldiers) and Confederate commissioned officers, non-commissioned officers and privates (totaling 1332 soldiers). Signed at the conclusion in type by Assistant Adjutant General E.D. Townsend. Accompanied by a nice Civil War-era 5¼" X 8½" heavy stock steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of Sherman.
