Description: The Civil War governor of Illinois (1861-65) also served as representative (1851-55) and senator (1865-71). Bold and handsome "Richd Yates / USS," tan 3½" X 1" slip, n.p. n.y. Fine. Though not dated, this would have been a free-franking signature clipped from a type of envelope commonly used by Congressman and dates to Yates' Senate period. Accompanied by an outstanding 1860s vintage steel-engraved portrait, heavy stock 6" X 9", engraved by J.C. Buttre of New York and captioned "Eminent Loyal Governors" in ornate flowing typeface along the lower margin. Head-and-shoulders portrait of 13 Union governors, each within a small oval border; Yates appears near the upper left. .
