Tight, handsome reprint of this 1952 University of North Carolina study, which Archer Jones critiqued as "An able and detailed treatment of the management, difficulties, and significance of Southern railways, with emphasis on the railways themselves." This copy bears a choice autograph addition: Tipped opposite the title page is an Autograph Note Signed from Black, 1p, heavy stock 5½" X 3¼" postal card, New York, NY, [1956] February 14. Addressed to Arnold Gates (1914-93, Lincoln and Civil War scholar, officer of the New York City Civil War Round Table). Near fine. Preprinted reply card for attending a Civil War Round Table meeting at the New York University Faculty Club. Black indicates he cannot attend, signs boldly at the close and pens a postscript: "P.S. In reply to your inquiry, I was in Jamaica, B.W.I. for 6 days. Lots of fun! But no monuments to C.S. soldiers." Black (1915-2001) was long-time history professor at Trinity College (1950-67) and authored four history titles, of which this was the best known. NEVINS I, 5. .
