Tight and quite attractive "special Kentucky bicentennial reprint" of the first title in the original "American Trails Series" edited by Jay Monaghan (which consisted of only three Bobbs-Merrill titles in 1947 and 1948, with McGraw-Hill resuming the series in 1962). The Wilderness Road ran from Louisville, Kentucky, through Tennessee and ended at Wadkin's Ferry, Virginia. Unique autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a nice content Typed Letter Signed from Kincaid (1893-1960), 1p, 8¼" X 11", Harrogate, TN, 1956 November 1. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. On "Lincoln Memorial University" letterhead citing Kincaid as president, he chats cordially with this officer of the New York Civil War Round Table. In part: "Many thanks for the little packet of material you have turned over to us, since we collect everything!! This will go into the tender hands of Bill Taylor and will be integrated into our loaded files of Lincoln and Civil War material.." Goes on about Round Table matters. Signed simply "Robert" in blue ink. An uncoimmon edition with a choice author letter. .
