Title: Physiological Chemistry
Description: Ann Arbor, F.A. Wagner, n.y. Hardcover. 4to. Burgundy cloth with gilt spine lettering. v, 309pp (all rectos only). Good plus. Slightly edgeworn and well rubbed; inside rear hinge a tad delicate but expertly, archivally strengthened, thus tight. Probable sole edition of this interesting, unusual text created by Vaughan for the use of his University of Michigan pupils, where he served as Professor of Hygiene and Physiological Chemistry and Dean of the Medical Faculty from 1877 to 1921. This rather homespun production is a mimeographed typeset -- single spaced and with miniscule margins -- and the title page cites Wagner as "Publisher and Mimeographer." It also gives a copyright year of 1895, and the preface is dated 1897, though we estimate the period of publication as circa 1910-1920. The print run was likely fairly small. Discreet ex-library, the only markings being a faint number at the tail of the spine and a small abrasion on the front flyleaf. Tipped to the front pastedown is a 6" X 12" printed handbill, titled "Physiological Chemistry" -- a handout to medical students, a lengthy two-column checklist of laboratory supplies needed for this course. A noted Missouri-born communicable disease specialist (1851-1929), Vaughan is remembered for his contributions to the war effort during World War One. .
