Title: Letter to a Politician. (Samuel J. Tilden. )
Description: Brooklyn, NY, Privately Printed, 1877. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff grey gazed wrappers. 9pp. Good. Wrappers, as seems usual, soiled and quite edgeworn; lacks rear grey wrapper. First edition. Fascinating 1869 critique of Tilden, at that time chairman of the New York Democratic committee, to clean up the corrupt Tweed ring. Despite typically worn and delicate condition, a decent and fairly handleable copy of this uncommon title. Greeley's 1869 missive to Tilden preaching to him about vote fraud was clearly published on the tail of the hotle contested 1876 presidential election, when Democratic candidate Tilden won the popular vote but lost to Republican candidate Rutherford Hayes in a dispute over the electoral votes of Florida, Louisiana and South Carolina, nearly causing a constitutional crisis. Popular sentiment felt that "we wuz robbed," hence the timeliness of Greeley's letter. Quite uncommon. .
