HOLMES, Fred L. - Badger Saint and Sinners

Title: Badger Saint and Sinners
Description: Milwaukee, E.M. Hale and Company, 1939. Hardcover. Foreword by Hamlin Garland. Illustrations by Ozzie Johnson. 8vo. Blue cloth, gilt. 570pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, maps. Near fine. A superb and tight first edition of this collection of essays about notable Wisconsinites -- the closing Chapter XXXII, titled "Sculpturing Day Dreams," profiles Clarence A. Shaler (born 1860), a Wisconsin farmer-turned-inventor who made his fortune in tire vulcanizing, retiring in 1928 to pursue his true love: sculpting. One of his best known works is his statue of a young Abraham Lincoln, which graces his alma mater, Ripon College. Shaler inscribes and signs this copy of the Holmes book large and bold in black ink on the front flyleaf: "To my friend / Edward Israel / With all good wishes / C.A. Shaler." An unusual copy signed by one of its subjects, ideal for display. .
