Author: RYAN, Thomas (1837-1914) Title: Document Signed
Description: This career politician served as a Republican congressman from Pennsylvania (1877-89), U.S. Ambassador to Mexico (1889-93) and Assistant Secretary of the Interior under McKinley and Roosevelt (1897-1907). Printed DS, 1p, 8" X 10½", Washington, DC, 1898 December 2. Very good. Mildly age toned. Handsome printed certificate in a variety of ornamental typefaces, with American Eagle crest, testifying to the authenticity of a copy of a document from the Office of the Commissioner of Pensions, signed boldly by H. CLAY EVANS (1843-1921) -- at that time Commissioner of Pensions (1897-1902) and previously two-time mayor of Chattanooga, Republican congressman from Tennessee (1889-91). Further statement below this testifies to Evans' position and is signed boldly by Ryan as "Acting Secretary of the Interior" -- the then-current interior secretary, Cornelius Bliss, apparently temporarily out of commission. Large red flute-edged paper seal at lower left intact and handsome, as are the two lengths of baby blue silk ribbon that run underneath it and up to the upper left of the document. An attractive and interesting item. .
