Author: TARDIEU, Andre (1876-1945) Title: Signature
Description: This influential and versatile French politician (1926 minister of transportation, 1928 minister of interior, 1931 minister of agriculture, 1932 minister of war, 1934 minister of state) served three times as prime minister, 1929-30, 1930, 1932); after military service in World War Two, he entered politics and became Georges Clemenceau's lieutenant at the Paris Peace Conference. Signature with ten others, 1p, 5¼" X 8¼", on board the ship "Lorrain," n.y. [likely 1917]. Near fine. Faint even age toning. On letterhead of "Le Commissaire General auz Affaires de Guerre Franco-Americaines" (Commissioner General for Franco-American War Cooperation), Tardie dates it at upper right ("November 17th"), adding "on board Lorrain" beneath and then signing large and bold at center near the top. Below him, in two rows, ten other diplomatic officials also sign. Among them are 1) Louis Aubert, Tardieu's secretary in Washington; others include 2) D. Rimond, 3) E.J. Requin, 4) R. Pillet, 5) Rene Lebonce and five others. Below these, at lower left, is a fine impression of a French official seal, boldly impressed in dark brown wax. Accompanied by a Typed Letter Signed from an assistant secretary ("D.R. Caruth"?) at the Department of State, 2pp, 8" X 10½", Washington, DC, 1928 April 21. Recipient's name/address snipped out. On "Department of State" letterhead, this official discusses Tardieu. In part: "..Mr. Andre Tardieu, French High Commissioner to the United States, arrived in Washington on May 17, 1917 accompanied by the following French officials.. After the French High Commission was fully organized there were upwards of eight hundred persons connected with it, the personnel changing from time to time. It is noted that Mr. Louis Aubert, Mr. R. Pillet and Mr. E.J. Requin were connected with the Commission and while the names of Mr. Lebonce and Mr. Rimond do not appear on the Department's records, the absence does not mean that they were at no time connected with that organization." Interesting background information, apparently part of an early attempt to research this Tardieu document. In any case, an intriguing shipboard-signed piece from the future prime minister and a diplomatic delegation. Most unusual. .
