Schaefer commissioned this bronze for Lincoln Memorial University (of which he was trustee) and was principal speaker at this dedication. He inscribes the verso of the title page to another well-known Lincoln collector, the radio pioneer and president of Broadcast Music, Inc.: "To Carl Haverlin / Who had their been / radio in Lincoln's time / and he a contemporary, / there would have been great / doings. / With respect, and good / wishes," signing and dating it June 7, 1953.
