FREMONT, Jessie Benton - The Story of the Guard: A Chronicle of the War

Title: The Story of the Guard: A Chronicle of the War
Description: Boston, Ticknor and Fields, 1863. Hardcover. 12mo. Brown heavily blind-embossed cloth with gilt spine lettering and decoration. xiii, 227pp, (2pp). Very good. Bit of wear at head and tail of spine, else tight, clean and nice; 1863 nonauthorial ownership signature on front flyleaf (brown ink on brown endpaper, thus barely discernible). Exceptionally tight and attractive first edition of what James I. Robertson Jr. criticized as "Too feminine and prejudiced to be of value; treats of her husband's mounted bodyguard." The controversial John C. Fremont (1813-90) -- military officer, explorer, senator, presidential candidate -- succeeded in driving the Confederates out of southwest Missouri. Wife Jessie (1924-1902) was the daughter of Missouri statesman Thomas Hart Benton and a noted writer and activist in her own right. NEVINS I, 91. .
