Title: Signed Postal Cover
Description: This cartographic engineer, artist and cartoonist joined the cartographic section of the Coast and Geodetic Survey after serving in World War One, where he redesigned the Department of Commerce seal and innovations such as a double scale compiling system for photographic reductions to scale; in 1957 he won a competition among C & GS staff to design the agency's 150th anniversary U.S. stamp. Signed Postal Cover, 6½" X 3½". Single 3-cent "Coast and Geodetic Survey 1807 - 1957" stamp at upper right. Fine. NOT a First Day Cover, but simply a mint example of this stamp affixed to an unaddressed, uncancelled envelope which MacEwen signs boldly in blue ballpoint at lower left. Small portion of original transmittal envelope (from Silver Springs, MD, 29 August 1969) present. .
