Author: POPE JOHN XXIII Title: Peace on Earth: An Encyclical Letter of His Holiness Pope John XXIII
Description: New York, Ridge Press / Golden Press, 1964. Paperback. Photographs by Magnum. 4to. Stiff glazed wrappers. 159pp. Numerous illustrations. Very good. Mild jacket wear and age toning. First of the paperback edition, tight and nice. "Pacem in Terris," notes the front wrapper. "Pope John's great tribute to the dignity of men of all faiths is here illuminated by the world's finest photographers" -- who include Ansel Adams, Cornell Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Inge Morath, Ernst Haas, Eve Arnold and others. This copy came from the library of noted printer and social protest poet JOHN BEECHER (1904-80), and the title page bears an intriguing inscription to him in blue ballpoint: "To John Beecher -- / as a way of expressing / my deep respect and / admiration -- / Brother Robert / 2/21/65." We've not been able to identify Brother Robert, but it's certainly likely he was connected with the publication of this book. Beecher also was a friend of the Trappist monk Thomas Merton, and had many connections in the monastic world -- making this inscription worth further research. .
