MAUGHAM, W. Somerset - The Moon and Sixpence

Title: The Moon and Sixpence
Description: Avon, CT, The Heritage Press, 1969. Hardcover. Illustrations by Frederic Dorr Steele and Paul Gauguin. Small 4to. Tan cloth with brown lettering, slipcase. 282pp. Color frontispiece, illustrations (many color), pictorial endpapers. Near fine/near fine. John T. Winterich introduces this fictional biography of artist Paul Gauguin. Tight, clean, handsome copy -- and this copy highly unusual in that in bears choice autograph additions. In 1959 a made-for-television version starring Laurence Olivier as Gauguin aired, and signatures of two co-stars are tipped to the inner flyleaf: At top is HUME CRONYN (1911-2003; portrays Dirk Stroeve), who boldly inscribes and signs "For John / Hume Cronyn" in blue ink on a fine 5½" X 2" manila slip; below this is JEAN MARSH (born 1934; portrays young Tahitian native Ata, Gauguin's second wife), who inscribes and signs "For Bruce / with my / best wishes / X / Jean Marsh" in blue ink in the message/address side of a fine 5½" X 4" picture postcard ("The British Airways Concorde supersonic jetliner") -- one wonders if this was signed at 40,000 feet flying at 1,350 mph. Quite an interesting copy. .
