Description: As a naval commander, this physician was severely injured in 1904 when a turret exploded abour the "Missouri," in which many others were killed and wounded -- but for the next 36 hours he tended the injured, until collapsing himself with a punctured lung; he also served as one of Theodore Roosevelt's personal physicians, and was awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor for services rendered in the Spanish-American War. Partly-printed ADS, 1p, 7½" X 3", Washington, DC, 1903 October 3. Near fine. Check drawn on The Riggs National Bank, filled out entirely in Urie's hand to the Chevy Chase Club for $48.50. Bank vignette at left and usual cancellation markings, not affecting signature. .
