Description: Vintage photograph, 2¼" X 3¼" tipped to heavy stock white-bordered beige bevel-edged 4" X 5" card, n.p. 1900 July 15. Very good. Handsome image of this obelisk monument commemorating the 21st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry's contribution at the Battle of Chickamauga, signed boldly by photographer Tillinghast in ink in the margin at lower right. On the verso, he pens bold and large: "Monument of / 21st Wis. Infantry. / Chickamauga. / [paraph] / Taken on the battle / field by A.R. Tillinghast / July 15, 1900." Whether Tillinghast was a professional or simply a talented amateur we have not been able to ascertain, but this warrants further research. Quite handsome and unusual. .
