Addressed to notable Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. On imprinted letterhead, James send this admirer "Thanks for your pleasant letter. It is things like that that keep writers writing." Boldly signed in full at the close. James (1891-1955) was a popular author and journalist awarded Pulitzer Prizes for his biographies of Andrew Jackson and Sam Houston. .
