DOUGLAS, Norman - South Wind

Title: South Wind
Description: Chicago, Argus Books, 1929. Hardcover. Illustrations by John Austen. Complete 2-volume set. Small 4to. Blue cloth with gilt lettering and decoration, dust jackets, black textured paper-over-boards slipcase. 288pp, 300pp. Tissue-guarded color frontispieces, 7 and 6 engravings respectively (some in color, tissue guarded). Fine/very good/very good. Books are pristine, while dust jackets both show faintly age toned spines and slipcase shows mild edgewear and couple of archivally strengthened seams. Handsome, tight first illustrated edition of this 1917 bestselling novel set off the coast of Italy on a thinly-veiled Capri, where Douglas lived much of his life. Accompanying this is an exceptional black-and-white portrait of Douglas in later life, heavy stock 3½" X 5½", n.p. n.y. Near fine. Two unobtrusive small tape stains on verso. Informal profile portrait of a pipe-smoking older Douglas, seated and clutching a cane, by famed portrait photographer CECIL BEATON (1904-80). Douglas had several portrait sessions with Beaton in the 1940s, including one in which he wears this same attire, but the date of this sitting is unknown. This real-photo postcard bears printed lines for recipient address, but was never addressed or mailed. It does bear, boldly inked in blue ballpoint, identifying information on verso in Beaton's hand: "George Norman Douglas / English Author / Born 1868 -- / Death in Capri 1952." A beautiful set with memorable illustrations and fine author portrait with notes in famed photog Beaton's script. .
