Description: Georgia senator and representative who resigned his seat in 1861 to join the Confederacy, becoming Confederate secretary of state and then brigadier general; he fled to London for several years after the war to avoid arrest, he returned and resumed practicing law -- though he never sought to regain citizenship. ANS, 1p, 5" X 3", n.p. n.d. Very good. Cryptic legal matter: "Browner has written me to file a bill against Burch -- you kindly offered to do it for me, & I will be much obliged if you will do so immediately." Signed simply "Toombs." This item has been handsomely and archivally double matted together with a brass plaque and a large, striking closeup photograph of a steel engraving of Toombs and framed in an ornate 1½" gilt frame (overall dimensions 20½" X 16½"). .
