Title: Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838-1839
Description: Harper & Brothers, New York, 1863. First Edition, Hardcover. Good Condition. 20cm x 13cm. 337 pages, 10 advertisements. Original blindstamped cloth, gilt lettering. Fanny Kemble's influential text in the literature of anti-slavery, based on her private journals documenting the conditions of the slaves on her husband's plantation and her growing abolitionist feelings. Published long after her return to Britain, and in the middle of the American Civil War, Journal of a Residence was influential on British views of the Confederacy and the Emancipation Proclamation, and helped to change the public opinion on the Empire's involvement in the war. The OED cites Kemble's 1839 journal as one of the earliest uses of the word vegetarian, though as the work was published in 1863 there remains discussion of that merit. Very minor chipping to spine head and tail. Minor rubbing and pushing to fore-edge corners. One centre gathering loosening and sitting proud though still intact. Contemporary ownership signature. Shipped Weight: .5 kilos.
