Description: 's-Gravenhage, Martinus Nijhoff, 1917. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Small folio portfolio. Pp. (iv), 8 text, with 31 text figures. Plus 12 finely printed collotype plates, of which one is printed in colour, with a total of 31 images. Portfolio of cloth and printed boards, gilt spine, cloth ties worn; some signs of use, boards bit soiled, one plate crease along fore edge due to fold. In a very good condition, plates in fine condition. ~ FIRST EDITION. This is the original Dutch edition of what was published later in German as "Beschreibung der Aegyptischen Sammlung des Niederländischen Reichsmuseums der Altertümer in Leiden." Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. Suitable only for very short printing runs, each plate would print no more than a few hundred impressions, and existing prints, when can be found in good condition, are worth pursuing, both for the scholar and collector. Original coloured collotypes are particularly rare. X-7 .
