The scientific study of Turkey and its history and culture in Czech lands dates back to the 19th century. Founders of this branch of "Oriental studies" were Max Grünert (1849-1929), Jaromír Bretislav Kosut (1854-1880), but especially their luminary student Rudolf Dvorák (1860-1920). Dvorák finished his doctoral studies in Leipzig and became a professor of Oriental philology at the Charles University in Prague. He is well known for his critical edition of the poetic work of the 16th-Century poet Baki (1526-1600), the greatest ghazal writer of Turkish literature whose ghazals were "minutely tooled with the care of a jeweller". Dvorák's work on Baki's Diwan is presented here in its completeness in the very rare first edition, one of Brill's pioneering works on the subject.
