The large scale Report, now considered a classic, was commissioned by the Ministry of Education in 1948 and describes the state of the so-called mass youth in the Netherlands. Six institutions were involved in the research which lasted some four years under the direction of the pedagog Martinus Jan Langeveld (1905-1989). The conclusions were not very promising. The researchers were concerned about the spiritual poverty among the youth, young people in cities and towns throughout the Netherlands with the Frisian village Harkema taking the dubious position at the top.
