Title: Histoire abregée des insectes qui se trouvent aux environs de Paris; Dans laquelle ces Animaux font rangés suivant un ordre méthodique, I-II. [TWO VOLUMES. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL STATE].
Description: Paris, Durand, 1762. Hardcover. Two volumes. Crown quarto. xxvii, 523; 690. Plus 22 folding engraved plates (10 to 1st volume, 12 to the 2nd, bound at end). With large folding chart to volume I. Hardcover, uniformly bound in contemporary full mottled calf, worn and with defects, nevertheless strong. Wormholes throughout (how appropriate!), practically all meticulously restored by fine expert hand, remaining traces at few text leaves and plates; some old institutional stamps, some annotation in pencil. This is an authentic set in the original state and in first binding, which is no longer glamorous but still full of charm. Leaves are very clean, neat, ample margined and free of foxing, plates are in the first state. Withal, a lovely, unique item. ~ The rare first edition. Étienne-Louis Geoffroy (1725-1810), a French entomologist and pharmacist. His "Histoire abregée des insectes" went through at least four editions. Some, in the spirit of the period, were fashionably coloured at a later, or very later stage. Copies of the first edition with the plates in the original, uncoloured state, remain rather scarce. TIMO-4 .
