Contemporary annotations in a very neat hand to first paste-down, few minute annotations in same hand elsewhere; small, neat, faded private stamp to bottom of title. HARDCOVER, bound in handsome contemporary half cloth and patterned boards, paper bit rubbed along extremities, gilt-blocked decorative spine, all edges dyed red. In fine condition. A lovely copy. ~ FIRST EDITION. See Jacques-Charles Brunet: "Nouvelles recherches bibliographiques" (Paris, 1834), which refers to the 1828 edition. Karl Julius Sillig (1801-1855) was a German classicist and Karl August Böttiger's (1760-1835) pupil and editor. Sillig's "Dictionary of the Artists of Antiquity: Architects, carvers, engravers, modellers, painters, sculptors, statuaries, and workers in bronze, gold, ivory, and silver (.)", translated from the Latin original by the Rev. H. W. Williams, was published in London in 1836 and again in 1837. His "Catalogus artificium" was much influential in its time and is considered his most important work.
