KENDALL, RICHARD - Drawn to Painting Leon Kossoff Drawings and Prints after Nicolas Poussin

Title: Drawn to Painting Leon Kossoff Drawings and Prints after Nicolas Poussin
Description: Merrell, London, 2000. Quarto hardcover, 128pp., colour and monochrome illustrations. Minor wear only; lightly toned text block edges. Otherwise near fine in like dustwrapper. Kossoff and Poussin could not seem more different. However, as Richard Kendall argues in his introductory essay, these surface dissimilarities are deceiving. Beneath the apparent paradox of one of the twentieth century's most expressive painters engaging with the master of restrained seventeenth-century classicism lie many startling similarities: their interest in the expressive potential of gesture and bodily form, their use of space and colour as narrative elements, and the interplay of mass, space and line that give Poussin's work its vividness and Kossoff's its raw energy. In these etchings Kossoff uses drawing to work back to a more intimate point of contact with Poussin's art, exploring the violence and emotion behind its surface refinement and in finding what is essential in art regardless of when it was made.
