Description: Walker, New York, NY, USA, 2008. Hardcover, large octavo, 390pp., colour plates, dustwrapper. New. Remainder. After the Great Fire of London wiped the slate clean (killing only a handful of people along the way), many opportunists in the realms of architecture, social planning and property redevelopment saw their way clear to building a "New Jerusalem" in the aftermath. Men like John Locke, Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor, envisioned a city of splendour, both in terms of spiritual purity and infrastructural perfection, backed up by an underlying mystical geometry that would bolster it from occult attack. How much of their plan they were able to accomplish is open to debate, and certainly they were hindered by an inrushing tide of fire refugees returning to reclaim their (and sometimes their neighbours') properties, as well as a horde of the relatives of plague victims keen to make good on their inheritances. The result was probably a long way from the vision that was originally mooted, and this book tracks the highs and lows of that oft-lauded but impractical scheme.
