Title: Far from a Donkey: The Life of General Sir Ivor Maxse
Description: Garage, Brassey's. 1995. (ISBN: 9781857531855). Hardcover. Condition good, clean with a dust jacket. General Sir Ivor Maxse's long life was filled with diverse experiences which included the Sudan Campaign in 1896-99, the Boer War and World War I. As a Divisional and Corps Commander and Inspector of Training in the BEF, he showed himself to be far ahead of his times, and pointed the way to the more skilful and effective tactics of the use of infantry in World War II. He was much admired by Liddell Hart and many other soldiers. Germany's General Paul von Hindenburg once famously referred to British soldiers as "lions led by donkeys'. However, whilst those around him stayed entrenched in the customs and traditions of the past, Maxse rose to the challenges before him and proved himself to be no "donkey" at all. John Baynes is the author of "Morale: A Study of Men and Courage", "The Jacobite Rising of 1715", the fourth volume of "The History of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)", "Soldiers of Scotland" (with John Laffin), "The Forgotten Victor: General Sir Richard O'Conner KT, GCB, DSO, MC", "No Reward But Honour?", "The British Soldier in the 1990s" and "Urquhart of Arnhem: The Life of Major General R.E. Urquhart CB, DSO". Used: Acceptable.
