Your Guide to Perpetual Youth This Prevention magazine book lists two dozen writers and researchers, and their efforts show up in the sheer mass of information it provides. Worried about suffering from any age-related debility, from arthritis to vision problems? They've got a few, and sometimes more than a few, suggestions on how to protect yourself. Want to stay thin, young-looking, and stress-free? They have plenty of ideas along those lines, too. In fact, this book deals with so many topics that you could see it not as an anti-aging book but as a general health text for the baby-boom generation. The authors have consulted a lot of scientific sources, and they do a good job of putting journalese into magazine-style prose (using such headlines as "Top 10 Superfoods to Protect Your Brainpower"). In fact, it's sort of like having two years' worth of longevity magazines in one place--and if you manage to read it all the way through, you'll know you've still got all your faculties intact. --Ben Kallen From Booklist Those who don't relish growing old or being old should look into this book of low-key, practical advice. Specific topics considered with aging in mind include the major parts of the body, various activities, important diseases, and several mental difficulties. Typical of the advice relayed are injunctions to walk and exercise simply (examples are given) rather than jog or use expensive equipment; to maintain a sensible, not a milligram-counting, diet; to keep both body and mind active; to try out new ideas and learn new skills; and to consider a sense of humor to be vital, for laughing is good for the body as well as the mind. The text is attractively presented, replete with sidebars and shaded highlights. A great book to crack when you are feeling fatalistic about aging or on the day you ask if the rut you're in is leading to where you want to go. William Beatty. Used: Acceptable.
