Illustrated in b/w and colour throughout. - Text in French. - Yves Marchand (France, 1981) and Romain Meffre (France, 1987) met in 2002 in Paris, where they both live. Together they began to build an archive of ruins in the changing urban landscape of Paris. Later they applied their method to other cities, increasingly photographing together with one camera. - Marchand and Meffre photographed Gunkanjima Island between 2008 and 2012. - Gunkanjima Island [or Hashima] is located in southwestern Japan, which takes its name from its appearance as a warship. Densely populated in the nineteenth century, after the discovery of a vein of coal, it is deserted from 1974 after an accident occurred at the mine. Since then, it has become a ghost island. - The island was also the scene for the James Bond movie Skyfall. - The historical pictures [b/w] displayed in this series were taken by photographer Chiyuki Ito, who lived on the island. - New copy. - Urban exploration photography / Urbex.
