Title: Bataksch-Nederduitsch Woordenboek. In dienst en op kosten van Het Nederlandsche Bijbelgenootschap vervaardigd.
Description: Amsterdam, Frederik Muller, 1861. viii,549,[8] pp. Contemporary clothbacked boards. With 28 (of 30) coloured lithograph plates by Th. Bruggemann after H. von Rosenberg [8] and C.A. Schröder [15], and the last 5 lithographs showing garments. - Hermanus Neubronner Van der Tuuk (1825-1894) is considered to be one of the founders of Indonesian linguistics. Between 1851-1857 Hermann lived and worked as a representative of the Dutch Bible Society among the Bataks in Sumatra. The result of his first period of field research was this Bataksch-Nederduitsch Woordenboek. - The fine lithograph plates showing all kinds of objects from daily life such as houses, household utensils, weapons, agricultural implements, textile and pieces of clothing. Van der Tuuk was not only a great scholar but at the same time an eccentric and sometimes vicious nonconformist, as shows in his remarks on the last 5 plates ''Ik hoop, dat een ander, die in de gelegenheid is Bataksche kleedingstukken te verzamelen, zich aan dit proefje van knoeijerij zal spiegelen, en van een beteren photograaf en lithograaf zal gebruik kunnen maken.''. - Lacking plate 23 and 25; name on first endpaper, otherwise a very good copy
