Interior in very good condition with minor signs of wear.; "When we began to collect in 1985, we were told that there were very few books available on Chinese furniture that would help us understand and select authentic pieces. We learned that the most important work had been written by Mr. Robert Ellsworth of New York, who had formed his collection from the late 1950s though the early 1970s. His book Chinese Furniture: Hardwood Examples of the Ming and Early Ch'ing Dynasties was published in 1971. In 1982 he organized and exhibition of Chinese hardwood furrniture in Hawaiian collections for the Honolulo Academy of Arts and wrote the accompanying catalogue; he had also written occasional articles on Chinese furniture. We immediately acquired his publications and began reading them and admiring the pieces. We were delighted to find that despite the many social and dynastic changes in China's history, some of the Chinese arts were being preserved by an American collector and dealer. Our collection consists of over one hundred pieces, most of which are included in this catalogue. We find our Chinese furniture to be both functional and beautiful. Because we live with our collection in a very tactile way - our children sleep in the beds, we eat our meals on a large painting table, we sit in the chairs and ch'uangs - we have developed an intimate familiarity with the proportions of Ming and early Ch'ing furniture, with what feels and looks right and what does not. The first piece we bought, a long huang hua-li table (no. 66) is still with us; other pieces have come and gone over the years. With the help of many educated friends and dealers, we have refined our connoisseurship so that we are now more easily able to distinguish the good from the bad." excerpt from the Volume I preface by Mimi and Raymond Hung 1996.; "Many of the smaller, but no less important pieces in this volume are a tribute to Mimi and the knowledge she has accumulated over fifteenth years. Mimi is ardently committed to this field and has worked very hard to put together the group of scholar's objects and personal furnishings. Her expertise and connoisseurship has grown steadily. Both Mimi and Raymond have accomplished the building of a collection which is probably unique and, at the same time, take great pleasure in living with their treasures whether in their homes of offices." excerpt from the Volume II preface by Robert Hatfield Ellsworth, 2015.
