The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; The Porcelain Collection at Dresden contains the largest and finest selection of early Japanese porcelain anywhere outside Japan. Consisting of about a thousand pieces, it was assembled by the Elector Frederick Augustus I of Saxony (1670-1733). 'Augustus the Strong' dealt largely with the Dutch East India Company, who were trading at the port of Nagasaki in the extreme southwest of Japan. Most of the great Dresden collection was acquired in and around Arita, a town just inland from Nagasaki. The author, who is Curator of the Dresden Porcelain Collection, first describes the development and work of the Arita factories and then goes on to demonstrate the extraordinary cultural cross-fertilization that existed during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries between European taste and Japanese craftsmanship and style. The book's aim, however, is not trace the long history of Japanese porcelain, but to introduce the reader to the special attractions of Arita porcelain, and to show the influence that this 'white gold' from Japan had upon the great European centres of porcelain manufacture, and in particular Meissen. This authoritative works, with its 88 pages of specially taken colour photographs, will appeal to anyone with an interest in porcelain. Good/Dust Jacket Included.
