Minor signs of wear on the interior. Signed by Mr. David Broughton on June 16th 1983.; Catalogue from an exhibition arranged by the Trustees of Burghley House, devoted to Chinese and Japanese export porcelain of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.; "The collection at Burghley House has been known to scholars for some considerable time, certainly as far back as the late nineteenth century when some of the more interesting Ming and Transitional porcelain was sold in order to discharge debts. Soame Jenyns and P.J. Donnelly recognised the importance of the collection and the celebrated '1688' Inventory, to which they both referred. Relatively little research was carried out on the collection. Jenyns writing about the the Christie's sale in 1959, which included several pieces from this Inventory says 'Unfortunately much of the oriental porcelain in this inventory must by then left Burleigh House'. In this assumption, however, he was incorrect. Only a small proportion of the collection was on view to the public, the majority of the Japanese and Chinese porcelains were either kept in the private apartments or locked in cupboards unopened for more than a generation. He was also unaware of the second and equally important Inventory included in the Last Will and Testament of Elizabeth, dowager Countess of Devonshire (dated 1690). In this document she bequeathed the contents of her bedchamber and closet to her daughter Anne, Countess of Exeter, wife of the Fifth Earl. This Inventory list over one hundred and fitly pieces of porcelain." excerpt from the introduction by Gordon Lang. Fine/No Jacket.
