Korean art is relatively unknown in the West, but the V&A has collected a unique selection of objects which reflect both the solemn ritual of court life and the sympathy for natural materials which is the hallmark of Korean crafsmen. The earliest Korean artefacts in the V&A are from the Silla (57 BC - AD 9325), producers of sombre unglazed vessels with pierced pedestals. Outstanding treasures such as delicate, green-glazed ceramics and a graceful bronze vase inlaid with silver date from Koryo times (935 - 1392). The succeeding Choson dynasty (1392 - 1910) is represented by a splendid array of domestic decorative arts, including lacquer inlaid with mother-of-pearl, court costumes and embroidery. Examples of contemporary crafts by artists exploring Korean traditions is also featured. This catalogue, includes 100 colour pages with a text explaing how the objects were made and used.
