It was from the latter part of the sixteenth century until the end of the eighteenth that the finest work was produced, but many of the purer forms are found in the earlier dynasties of Han and Sung. The efforts of the authors have been directed to securing the reproduction of the finest specimens to be found in private collections and museums, and to classifying and faithfully describing them. To thoroughly appreciate Chinese porcelain it should be borne in mind that everything used in the decoration has its significance, all of which is set out in both English and French in the descriptions facing each reproduction. The illustrations, of which there are 254 pages, counting pairs, sets, and groups as one, include the rarest, finest, and most precious examples that have issued from the potter's hands. With regard to Glyptic art, the workmanship of which evokes the enthusiasm of a great number of collectors, the authors have felt justified in reproducing specimens which it must be admitted are of the highest standard, and it is believed that this is the first time these beautiful examples of art have been reproduced in their actual colours. They include carved jades, crystals, chalcedonies, jasper, etc." excerpt from the preface. Good/No Jacket.
