Rolf Cunliffe “started his collection of Chinese artworks by buying a piece as a birthday present for his brother – but then kept it. As a RAF officer stationed in London during the later part of World War II, and with all is family evacuated to America, he needed a distraction in his time off duty.” His flat near Grosvenor Square was small, “so pieces were changed frequently, and then returned to the celadon green steel office cabinets squeezed into his bathroom. Thus it was that visiting collectors like the King of Sweden would spend happy hours sitting on the edge of the bath discussing the finer points of a jade rhyton or a Junyao bowl.” (these quotations are excerpts from the introduction by Roger Cunliffe).; “Over a period of almost twenty years Lord Cunliffe purchased more than 400 pieces from Bluetts. These ranged in type from early jades and fine Shang bronzes to the best of the Ming Imperial porcelains, and a relatively small number of Qing wares. His Song ceramics included almost all categories known in those years with the exception of Ruyao, always a very scarce commodity.” excerpt from the text by Anthony Carter and Dominic Jellinek.; “It is true as Anthony Carter and Dominic Jellinek write, that the Cunliffe Collection represents the second great omoment of ‘English collecting Chinese ceramics’ excerpt from Colin Sheaf text.
