Their enthusiasm for a joint exhibition of the Chinese paintings owned by the two museums was quickly shared by the curators, Wai-kam Ho (Cleveland) and Marc Wilson (Kansas City), and by the trustees of both institutions. The compelling reasons for such an enterprise were as follows. The number and quality of Chinese paintings involved were substantial and excellent. Furthermore, the two collections complemented each other in a most meaningful fashion - Kansas City's particular strength in early paintings being matched by Cleveland's large holdings in works created after the Sung Dynasty. Even within those areas where each collection had good representation, the particular artists or subjects can be seen to be complementary.
