I would like to use this occasion to offer my deepest thanks to the Asahi Shimbun Foundation for supporting the recent conservation work. This exhibition gathers together all four volumes of the famous Choju Giga alongside five fragments, some of which are preserved outside Japan. As such, it provides a rare opportunity to view all the currently-known sections of Choju Giga in one place. Kosan-ji Temple was revived by the priest Myo'e (1173-1232) after the retired Emperor Gotoba ordered him to establish a training hall for Kegon Buddhism at Togano-o, an area to the northwest of Kyoto. Kosan-ji subsequently built up a large collection of cultural properties on the back of offerings made by prominent followers of Myo'e. This exhibition introduces some of these cultural assets alongside numerous other artworks associated with Myo'e to offer an insight into his unique and highly-diverse religious outlook. I would like to offer my sincerest gratitude to everyone who made this exhibition possible. It would bring me great joy if visitors leave the exhibition with a new interest in Myo'e, the scholar and the man of action, and I look forward to welcoming you all to Kosan-ji Temple in the future." introductory text by Ogawa Chie, Abbot.
