He dominated the 19th century alongside the illustrious names of Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kunisada. A prolific and multi-talented artist, Kuniyoshi portrayed the historic heroes of Japan's warrior past. With mythical ghosts and demons haunting his designs these heroes constitute the most important part of his oeuvre. At the same time he transformed the genre of landscape prints by incorporating Western painting conventions. Kuniyoshi's sense of humour surfaces in his prints of comical or satyrical subjects (gigo-e). Cats appear as silent observers of scenes of everyday life. In his more traditional rendering of beauties and actors his strong and transparent style always shines through. By using over three hundred examples from public and private collections throughout the world, the author has managed to produce the most comprehensive overview of the artist's abilities in a Western language. The book contains detailed descriptions of Kuniyoshi's prints as well as essays by Amy Newland, Tim Clark, Matthi Forrer and Inagaki Shin'ichi. This publication has been produced on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Society for Japanese Arts. Good/Dust Jacket Included.
