The exhibition, a survey of the development of the ceramic art in China from early to modern times, draws almost entirely upon the more than 4,500 examples of Chinese pottery in the Museum collection. Chinese ceramic history, which spans over seven thousand years, is sketched here to acquaint the visitor with the chronological background of the objects displayed. An understanding of the technology developed to create these wares is also central to an enjoyment of them and so is sum- marized here as well. Certain wares not represented in the Metropolitan collection are important links in the chain of Chinese ceramics, and a sampling of such pieces from other collections is shown in the text. The thread of tradition and innovation that winds through the entire history of Chinese ceramics is the overwhelming theme in the development of the Chinese potter's art and in this survey. Archeological discoveries made in recent years, some of which have made necessary a complete rewriting of particular aspects of Chinese ceramic history, are noted. Since 1949, an enormous amount of archeological activity has taken place in China, and I have no doubt that in the next few decades excavations will provide even more important material for art historians. Some more recent or less well- known references have been provided in footnotes for those who wish to pursue a given subject in more detail." excerpt from the preface by Suzanne G. Valenstein, Febraury, 1975. Good/No Jacket.
