105980: EDENS, CATJA; TILMAN, HARM - Dutch realist. De Zwarte Hond, Karelse Van der Meer, Architecten. A tendency towards specialisation in the current practice of building is threatening to curtail the architect's influence on building projects. An increasing number of consultants and specialists deal with various aspects of the project, leaving architects to be no more than designers. In many cases, little interaction occurs among the disciplines involved, responsibility for the finished product is fragmented, and the design itself receives scant attention.

A comprehensive overview of the renowned Frank Nievergelt Collection of contemporary ceramics - with approximately 100 pieces by forty-one international artists. Accompanies the exhibition Passionément céramique at Musée Ariana, Geneva, Switzerland, April to September 2016* The museum's curator Anne-Claire Schumacher adds vital information about the artistsWith passion and expert insight, Frank Nievergelt compiled an impressive collection over forty-five years of more than 900 pieces of contemporary ceramics, ranging from vessels and sculptures via display pieces to monumental works. Over one hundred leading figures of the international ceramic scene from 1970 to 2015 are represented in the collection, the emphasis of which is on newer objects. In this publication, the most significant pieces of this renowned collection are presented in a selection of forty-one artists, hence impressively highlighting the unaffected beauty and diversity of contemporary ceramic art. Moreover, Nievergelt introduces the artists individually, enhanced with reflections from Anne-Claire Schumacher (curator of the Musée Ariana) and Prof. Volker Ellwanger. 111354: EMDEN, CEMAL - Le Corbusier: The Complete Buildings. This visual tour of every one of Le Corbusier's buildings across the world represents the most comprehensive photographic archive of the architect's work. In 2010, photographer Cemal Emden set out to document every building designed by the master architect Le Corbusier. Traveling through three continents, Emden photographed all the 52 buildings that remain standing. Each of these buildings is featured in the book and captured from multiple angles, with images revealing their exterior and interior details. Interspersed throughout the book are texts by leading architects and scholars, whose commentaries are as fascinating and varied as the buildings themselves. The book closes with an illustrated, annotated index. From the early Villa Vallet, built in Switzerland in 1905, to his groundbreaking Unit? d'Habitation in Marseille, completed in 1947, this ambitious project presents the entirety and diversity of Le Corbusier's architectural output.

108623: ENLI, ZHANG - Zhang Enli. Four Seasons. The post-socialist art boom in 1990s China mostly passed by the painter Zhang Enli (b. Jilin Province, China, 1965; lives and works in Shanghai), but in the past few years, his oeuvre has garnered international attention. Zhang's more recent paintings show the beauty of nature in enlarged details: water surfaces, trees, foliage in close-up views captured on canvas that cautiously undo the division between interior and exterior spaces. Yet his pictures do not show ideal landscapes; deeply convinced that nature, too, is capable of feeling, he treats his motifs with the technique of traditional Chinese painting, applying highly diluted ink in deliberate brushstrokes. The pencil underdrawings remain visible beneath the transparent layers of color, leaving no doubt that painting is an artifact, a likeness, and not an illusion. In his Space Paintings, Zhang Enli paints directly on the walls of a room to create a nostalgic atmosphere balanced between abstract gesture and figural remaking. With texts by Robin Marriner and Gregor Muir.

107577: ESCHE, CHARLES, NIEMANN, KERSTIN & SMITH, STEPHANIE. - Heartland. Throughout the vast interior of the United States, contemporary artists are responding to the world around them and reshaping it in unexpected ways. Published to coincide with an exhibition of the same name that first appeared last year in the Netherlands and will open in fall 2009 at the University of Chicago’s Smart Museum of Art, Heartland offers an idiosyncratic look at innovative forms of cultural production taking place across the region. This engaging book is part critical reader, part catalogue. Contributors-including novelist Dave Eggers, scholar Hasan Kwame Jeffries, and journalist Rebecca Solnit-explore the region through topics ranging from art to music to urban farming to political history. An illustrated section introduces over twenty artists featured in Heartland, including both established figures like Kerry James Marshall and exuberant newcomers like the group Whoop Dee Doo. An appendix surveys the lively state of independent and artist-run cultural initiatives from New Orleans to Detroit. Produced by the Van Abbemuseum and the Smart Museum of Art, Heartland challenges expectations of place and illuminates a diverse assembly of artists who are redefining the cultural terrain of the American heartland.

107757: ESKILDSEN, UTE - Street & studio. An urban history of photography. The street allows photographers to conceal cameras and catch subjects unaware, in informal settings. By contrast, the studio permits both photographers and subjects to present carefully composed images to the world through elaborate staging and technical tricks. In recent years, with celebrities posing in the street and the studio being used for more informal, intimate shots, both traditions have undergone a transformation. This stunning collection features many of the greatest street hotographers of all time--Atget, Brassai, Cartier-Bresson, Arbus, Frank, as well as studio-based artists such as Carlo Ponti, Edward Steichen, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, and Jurgen Teller.

109741: FAHN, MONIKA - Doris Betz: Schmuck und Zeichnung/ Jewellery and Drawing. Presents a selection of Betz's jewelry alongside original design sketches for the very first time - Inspired by natural forms, Betz's award-winning jewels are challenging both to create and interpret Doris Betz (b. 1960) is devoted to exploring linear form in her work. In her drawings she fathoms the depths of the potential of the line and the possibilities of the material silver, which she then contorts, turns, rolls and turns again, finally lacquering, oxidizing or patinating with a flame to create the final jewel. Unforeseen fragile-looking and poetic formations emerge as Betz overlaps, knots and layers her material, rendering visible her jewelry's relationship to the vegetal language of natural forms - a source of inspiration for the artist. This book presents a selection of her jewelry works together with drawings from 2009 to 2016 for the very first time. With essays by: Monika Fahn, Pravu Mazumdar, Ira Mazzoni and Olga Zobel. 108506: FALK, FRITZ - Himmlisch/ Heavenly. Sonne, Mond und Sterne im Schmuck/ The Sun, Moon and Stars in Jewellery. *Publication accompanies the exhibition at the Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim (DE), 8.7. 30.10.2016. Fascinating trip through thousands of years of jewelry history*Leading authority in jewelry, Fritz Falk, explains the star motif's role in a historical contextJewelry and the universe are bound together not just in the Ancient Greek sense of the word 'cosmos'; the sun, moon and stars invariably also found their way into representative forms of art jewelry around the world. While magical, mythological and religious references stood mainly at the forefront of ancient and non-European cultures, over the course of recent history it was on decorative grounds that jewelry pieces with cosmic motifs became so coveted. Whether Köchert in Vienna, Fabergé in St Petersburg or Lalique in Paris, the great jewelers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries were all inspired by heavenly forms. Today, interest in celestial bodies remains unbroken among contemporary internationally celebrated jewelry artists. With his new, richly illustrated book, the long-standing head of the Jewellery Museum Pforzheim presents for the first time a comprehensive review on the star motif in jewelry - from Ancient Egypt to the present day. Text in English and German.

108177: FEI, CHEN - Chen Fei. The work of Chen Fei (b. Shanxi, China, 1983; lives and works in Beijing) is part of a new trend in contemporary Chinese art that represents a clear thematic as well as aesthetic departure from the avant-garde art of the 1980s and 1990s. His pictures evince the unconscious influence of the many movies he has seen since he was a child--masterworks and cult classics as well as B movies. He actually enrolled at the Beijing Film Academy; a series of paintings shows 202 villains, with their characteristic costumes and accessories, from 197 movies ranging from ClockworkOrange to IchitheKiller, from The Shining to Kill Bill, from Hard Candy to Bride of Chucky. The same morbid sense of humor is evident in Chen's more recent paintings. His brush transmutes scenes of human anatomy or death into harmless jokes. What truly impresses him, Chen Fei says, are the rogues, not the upstanding citizens, and the same goes for painting: beauty and good health leave him bored.

108160: FELTON, NICHOLAS; EHMANN, SVEN; KLANTEN, ROBERT; - Photoviz. Visualizing Information Through Photography. The stories told with graphics and infographics are now being visualized through photography. Fotoviz shows how these powerful images are depicting correlations, making the invisible visible, and revealing more detail than classic photojournalism. Images are omnipresent in our digital age, but they're worth a closer look. Many of them can tell us stories in new and surprising ways. Fotoviz reveals how infographics and data visualization are currently impacting photography and points to innovative possibilities for the future. Today, data is being visualized through photographic techniques such as long and multiple exposures. Insightful information is being communicated by making a single image out of several different shots or using a 3D perspective.

108481: FREHNER, MATTHIAS; SPANKE, DANIEL; - Modern Masters. Degenerate Art at the Kunstmuseum Bern. Kunstmuseum Bern, the oldest museum in Switzerland, turns its gaze toward its own acquisition history in this lavish book that features artistic masterpieces considered worthless by the Nazis, and the stories of how they came to Switzerland. As a result of the Nazi regime s scorn for modern art, virtually all non-traditional art between 1933 and 1945 was banned in Germany on the grounds that it was un-German, Jewish, or Communist in nature. Those identified as degenerate artists were dismissed from teaching positions and forbidden to exhibit or to sell their works. This book sheds light on the historical significance and provenance of nearly 525 works by modernist greats, such as Picasso, Chagall, and Kandinsky, which were acquired by the Kunstmuseum Bern through a combination of auctions and private donations. The book traces the fates of artists who suffered under the Nazi regime and who had connections to Switzerland, including Kirchner, Klee and Dix, and contrasts the cultural policies of the Third Reich with those of Switzerland in the same period. Finally, it details the dramatic events and unprecedented efforts that went into preserving invaluable works of art.

Now available in a new expanded edition, this collection of extraordinary images from beneath London's streets will fascinate anyone interested in what lies under the surface of one of the world's greatest cities. Peel back the layers under a London street and you'll discover a haunting, dreamlike world of hand-laid brick sewers, forgotten tube stations, World War II evacuation shelters, secret government bunkers, and tunnel boring machines laying new sewer, communication, and transport grids. Bradley L. Garrett has worked with explorers of subterranean London to collect an astonishing array of images documenting forbidden infiltrations into the secret bowels of the city. This book takes readers through progressively deeper levels of London's historical and contemporary architecture below the streets. Beautifully designed to allow for detailed viewing and featuring bespoke illustrations by artist Stephen Walter, Subterranean London reveals the locations few dare to go, and even fewer succeed in accessing.

Yearning, vulnerability, self-image, and desire--all of this can be found in the densely atmospheric photographs of Florian Geiss (born 1969), which emanate a fascinating yet disturbing aura. In Gimme Shelter, the German photographer focuses on his protagonists' search for identity and individuality in the aspirational dream known as the American way of life. With their interplay of light and shadow, and minimal, yet succinct colors, these works unite formal elements of cinematic advertising aesthetics with traditional American color photography. Intimate portraits and panoramic landscape pictures open up spaces for questions about belonging and unconventionality, dreams of life, and reality.

In Dénesh Ghyczy's works of the last two decades, abstraction and representation encounter one another in a vibrant manner and question the relationship of observing and painting. Always visible in them is the point of departure. In many paintings, the individuals depicted have their eyes closed: they are looking for contact to something that does not become visible in the picture. Ghyczy's paintings do, nonetheless, succeed in giving the attentive viewer an idea of these realms of experience. They tell of intimate moments and of instants of self-forgetfulness in our fast-paced society. The publication Between Lines? presents a representative selection of works from the past seventeen years, created during his creative periods in Budapest and Berlin.

Whatever themes Karin Kneffel has taken on in the years that followed, be it fruit, Roman frescoes spread out behind contemporary viewers or the integration of Mies van der Rohe’s villas into a pictorial world of mirroring and reflections: It is all a meticulously rendered detail from the story of our own lives, which she transforms into stupendous images.

This engaging book provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the seasonal magic of The New York Botanical Garden s annual Holiday Train Show. The New York Botanical Garden is the magical setting of one of the city s most celebrated winter traditions: The Holiday Train Show. This must-see exhibition features dozens of locomotives, freight trains, and trolleys zipping through a whimsical landscape populated by more than 150 models of beloved city landmarks, composed entirely of leaves, twigs, seeds, pinecones, and other plant parts. Together with his team at Applied Imagination, Paul Busse and the horticulturists at The New York Botanical Garden create a fanciful tribute to the beauty of New York s iconic architecture, using natural materials and unbridled imagination.

Timothy J. Clark, Thierry de Duve, Constance Naubert-Riser, and Thomas Crow focus on specific works of major artists of the period. Laurie J. Monahan, Serge Guilbaut, and Benjamin H. D. Buchloh look at art production in relation to particular aspects of the Cold War. Jean Baudrillard and Francois-Marc Gagnon discuss the effects of the international situation on the arts in general. John Franklin Koenig describes the experience of an American artist working in Paris after the war. John O'Brian relates the impact and the reception of Matisse's work in New York, and Lary May discusses the transformation of Hollywood during the McCarthy era. 106588: GUTTERMAN, SCOTT - Sun Light on the River. Poems about Paintings, Paintings about Poems. The world's great poets interpret the world's great art in this exquisite book that investigates the connection between art and words, deepening our understanding of both. The poet and the artist share a special kind of vision--an ability to see and penetrate the very essence of their subjects. This volume features poems by writers who turned to paintings for their inspiration, as well as paintings by artists who based their works on poems. Stretching across centuries and styles, this collection includes Rossetti's haunting sonnet based on Botticelli's Primavera; Wallace Stevens's TheManwiththeBlueGuitar, a masterful meditation on an iconic painting by Picasso; William Carlos Williams's joyous interpretations of scenes by Breughel; and Adrienne Rich lending a compassionate voice to the subject of Edwin Romanzo Elmer's The Mourning Chair. These and other pairings appear as elegant texts facing full page, glowing illustrations of the paintings. An introduction to some of the greatest poets and painters in history, this remarkable book makes a perfect gift, offering compelling insights into the worlds of art and literature, and the relationship between the two.. This volume features poems by writers who turned to paintings for their inspiration, as well as paintings by artists who based their works on poems..

Terje Ekstrom was the first postmodern designer in Norway and his futuristic chairs even made it into the Star Trek TV-Series; this is the first monograph on the designer Informative description of the Norwegian design scene in the 1980s Accompanies the exhibition of Frank Nievergelt's donation at The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo (NO)The work of the pioneering designer Terje Ekstrom (1944-2013) contributed a new vitality and independence to the Norwegian design scene of the 1970s and '80s, at a time of cultural and social change. Ekstrom represented a new generation of designers who challenged the ideals of the golden age of Scandinavian design. As this richly illustrated book shows, Ekstrom was both a product of his own time and far ahead of it. Seen as one of Norway's first postmodern designers, his internationally successful Ekstrem chair achieved iconic status due to its unique and visionary qualities, as did his audio equipment design for the renowned Tandberg Radiofabrikk. Including specially commissioned photographs of his workplace and home, this book for the first time tells the story of Ekstrom's design practice, characterized by an eclectic search for originality.

Through a decade of friendship, sharing the same environs and being active collectors, Sonja Graber and Christian Graber are inextricably connected to the photographer Annelies Strba, the jewelry and object artist Bernhard Schobinger and the painter Adrian Schiess. A far cry from thoughts of prestige and conjecture, one of the most extensive collections from all genres of the three Swiss artists has now emerged out of artistic and personal esteem. In the collectors, the artists and the Kunsthaus Zug, like-minded people have come together in the most indiscriminate appreciation of fine and applied art. To mark the occasion of the donation of the Graber collections to the museum, the three internationally renowned artists along with hitherto largely unpublished works are now united in one publication. Contents: Foreword by Matthias Haldemann; Introduction to the Graber Collection by Marco Obrist; Things, Art Art Things by Felix Philipp Ingold; UNDINE'S SONG. Comprehensive and lavishly illustrated monograph on one of Norway's most outstanding contemporary artistsAccompanies Borchgrevink's solo exhibition at Lillehammer Art Museum, Lillehammer (NO) on the occasion of the museum's re-opening in autumn 2015Painting and graphic prints are the preferred mediums of the Norwegian artist Hanne Borchgrevink (b.1951), who over the course of time has focused her attention on the house as the leitmotif of her work. She reduces it to its elemental forms, which forever encounter new constellations. At the intersection of figuration and abstraction, of the verbal and non-verbal, the artist explores in her reduced language of forms color, surface and perception in a methodical and analytical way. Borchgrevink has long occupied a prominent position in the contemporary art of Norway, for in the repetition of her painterly and motivic vocabulary she always manages to find ever new and surprising as well as provocative answers. Through the lens of photographer Sanna Lindberg, the poetic force of Hanna Hedman's jewellery art is revealed in a way that consciously stretches the expectations of what jewellery art is and can be. Over the course of eight years, Hedman and Lindberg have established an interdisciplinary collaboration in which their separate artistic moods and expressions have been combined into a unique figurative universe.

From the leafy promenades along the Ljubljanica River in Slovenia and the lush, tropical gardens at Lunuganga in Sri Lanka, to the Peace Memorial Park in Japan and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., each of these public sites is currently accessible--a fact that makes this grouping a superb must-seelist for landscape enthusiasts. Candida Höfer creates meticulously composed images of public and institutional spaces marked with the richness of human activity, yet largely devoid of human presence. Whether a photograph of a national library or a lounge at Volkswagen's headquarters, Höfer's images ask us to conduct distanced, disengaged examinations through the windows she creates. The collected images present a universe wholly constructed by human intention, unearthing patterns of order and logic imposed on these spaces by their absent creators and inhabitants. The Architecture of Absence examines Höfer's oeuvre and its relationship to the work of other noted students of renowned professors Bernd and Hilla Becher. An exhibition of this work will open at the University Art Museum at California State University, Long Beach in January 2005, and travel to the co-organizing museum, the Norton Museum in Florida, among other venues.

108176: HOLEN, YNGVE - Yngve Holen. Tryphobia. The Norwegian-German artist Yngve Holen (b. Braunschweig, 1982; lives and works in Berlin) uses sculpture and imaging techniques to explore themes of transportation, technology, and the body. The multiple series of works he made between 2010-2015 illustrate Holen's use of 3D printing, water-cutting, tailoring, and consumer spare parts to test the material limits that define today's industries and our everyday surroundings. Trypophobia is Holen's first monograph and includes seven essays by writers and artists. Repeatedly alternating between satin and uncoated papers, the book phases between serial images and text. It begins with a SWOT analysis of the artist by Aedrhlsomrs Othryutupt Lauecehrofn that evaluates Holen's strengths, wea¬knesses, opportunities, and threats. Victoria Camblin discusses Holen's use of industrial objects that feature holes, exploring the esoteric and erotic significance of the form in art history. Com-bining an essay with an interview with the artist, Thom Bettridge considers our obsession with hygiene, the consumer-as-product, and how far an idea can go before it stops working. S01E01 wri¬tes about the psychological implications of today's industrial speed, particularly through our relationship to commercial air travel. Outlining the problems of thecontemporary, Pablo Larios exa¬mines the animism and fetishism of capitalism, coded forms of closed trade knowledge, and biological humor in sculpture. Karl Holmqvist looks at Holen's 3D-printed, titanium-grade metal Hater Head screw and the role such tiny objects play in the built environ¬ment as well as in our minds and fantasies. Finally, Eric Schmid probes the gap between the spaces of thought of philosophers Alain Badiou and Jacques Rancière, arguing for determinism in our preoccupation with the event.

It all began with a gift: in 1815 the banker Johann Friedrich Städel (1728 1816) bequeathed his art collection and assets to the citizens of Frankfurt and in doing so laid the foundation for one of the oldest museums in Germany. To mark its 200th anniversary, the highlights of the house are now engaging in dialogue with preeminent lenders from the most renowned museums in the world, covering all areas of collecting, from the Middle Ages to the present day.
104594: HOLLIS, LEO - Cities are Good for You. The Genius of the Metropolis. The 21st century will be the age of the city. Already over 50% of the world population live in urban centres and over the coming decades this percentage will increase - with consequences for us all. But this does not mean that things will only get worse. In fact our urban future might just be something to look forward to. Blending anecdote, fact and first hand encounters - from exploring the slums of Mumbai, to visiting roof-top farms in Brooklyn and attending secret dinner parties in Paris, to riding the bus in Latin America - Leo Hollis reveals that we have misunderstood how cities work for too long. Upending long-held assumptions and challenging accepted wisdom, he explores: why cities can never be rational, organised places; how we can walk in a crowd without bumping into people, and if we can design places that make people want to kiss; whether we have the right solution to the problem of the slums; how ants, slime mould and traffic jams can make us rethink congestion. And above all, the unexpected reasons why living in the city can make us fitter, richer, smarter, greener, more creative - and, perhaps, even happier. Cities Are Good for You introduces dreamers, planners, revolutionaries, writers, scientists, architects, slum-dwellers and emperors. It is shaped by the idea that cities are the greatest social experiment in human history, built for people, and by the people.
110758: HOLMES, MARY TAVENER - Nicolas Lancret, 1690-1743. During his lifetime (1690-1743), and throughout the greater part of the eighteenth century, Nicolas Lancret was one of the most celebrated artists in France. After nearly two centuries of having been overshadowed by the work of certain contemporaries (notably Watteau), the singular appeal and sophisticated charm of Lancret's genre paintings are once more widely recognized and appreciated. This is the first book in English about Lancret, a key force in the development of the visual arts in eighteenth-century France. As one of the leading artists of his time, Lancret counted among his patrons the crowned heads of Europe, along with major connoisseurs among the aristocracy and in the financial community. He was also the favorite genre artist of Louis XV, who commissioned paintings from him for various royal residences--especially Versailles and Fontainebleau. The reasons for Lancret's popularity and success are apparent in the paintings and drawings splendidly reproduced in this book. His pictures tell lively and intelligible stories, his themes are inventive and entertaining, and his color combinations are bright and striking. His images made the transition from decorative painting to engraving with ease, and then proceeded to capture the popular imagination in much the same way as amusing gossip. As he matured, Lancret developed his talent for narrative--for a visual form of storytelling that is subtle and sophisticated, yet also ingenuous and folkloric.
109703: HÖLSCHER, PETRA; GALI, ANDRÉ; - Tone Vigeland. Schmuck - Objekt - Skulptur. Jewelry - Objects - Sculpture. * The first well-founded and richly ilustrated presentation of Tone Vigeland's art jewellery and sculpture for over fifteen years* Spanning 50 years of creative work by one of Norway's most outstanding artists* Accompanies a retrospective at Die Neue Sammlung - The Design Museum, Munich (DE), in spring 2017Scandinavian studio jewelry is simply unimaginable without Tone Vigeland (b.1938) and her work. Her distinctive objects flatter the human body and captivate through their dimensions and volume, yet they are assembled from the tiniest hand-crafted components. Tubes of silver wire, precisely cut plates, spheres and eyelets, all in small scale, are invisibly interconnected, and Vigeland's use of heavily oxidised, almost iron-black silver and steel is a typical feature. 107257: JAPPE, ANSELM - Guy Debord. This is the first serious intellectual biography of Guy Debord, prime mover of the Situationist International (1957-1972) and author of The Society of the Spectacle, perhaps the seminal book of May 1968 in France. Anselm Jappe rejects recent attempts to set Debord up as a postmodern icon, arguing that he was a social theorist in the Hegelian-Marxist tradition--not a precursor of Jean Baudrillard but an heir of the young Georg Lukács of History and Class Consciousness (1923). Neither hagiographical nor sectarian, Guy Debord places its subject squarely in his historical context: the politicizing Letterist and Situationist anti-artists who, in the European aftermath of World War II, sought to criticize and transcend the Surrealist legacy. The book offers a lively, critical, and unusually reliable account of Debord's lastavant-garde on its way from radical bohemianism to revolutionary theory. Jappe also discusses Debord's films, which are largely inaccessible at present. This English language edition of the book has been revised by the author and features an updated critical bibliography of Debord and the Situationists.

Constantin Jaxy (* 1957 in Bremen), who studied at the art academies in Braunschweig and The Hague, is presenting a selection from his oeuvre in a chronologically structured overview of 30 years of creativity. What distinguishes the works presented is their affinity with the technical, with the architectural and the constructed, whereby Jaxy creates a kind of parallel universe to the technical world. His work is multifaceted: drawings, prints, paintings, objects and wall objects, sculptures, room constructions, light, sound, and shadow installations, which are all closely interwoven with one another and are each part of his overall expression as an artist. In this comprehensive form, the book is a premiere. Exhibition: Galerie Lilian Andrée, Basel-Riehen, Switzerland (02.04-21.05.2017).
111477: JAY, MARTIN - Downcast Eyes. The Denigration of Vision in Twentieth-Century French Thought. Long considered thenoblestofthesenses, vision has increasingly come under critical scrutiny by a wide range of thinkers who question its dominance in Western culture. These critics of vision, especially prominent in twentieth-century France, have challenged its allegedly superior capacity to provide access to the world. They have also criticized its supposed complicity with political and social oppression through the promulgation of spectacle and surveillance. Martin Jay turns to this discourse surrounding vision and explores its often contradictory implications in the work of such influential figures as Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan, Louis Althusser, Guy Debord, Luce Irigaray, Emmanuel Levinas, and Jacques Derrida.

Homeowners search continuously for ways in which to rework existing residential space - for improved size, comfort, functionality and financial gain. As demonstrated in this timely publication, an architect must possess significant skill to create such an extraordinary collection of home extensions and renovations. From simple room additions to complete demolition and rebuild jobs, this book explores some of the infinite ways in which architects have reinvented original homes. The results are astonishing in their diversity and innovation. Detailed project descriptions, drawings, house plans and full-colour 'before' and 'after' photographs in some cases, explain the thinking and process behind each extension from inception to completion.

106594: JODIDIO, PHILIP - Marc Mimram. Architecture & Structure. A generously illustrated monograph on the acclaimed French architect and engineer Marc Mimram whose original work is influenced by both disciplines. Since his debut as an architect and engineer with a footbridge over a highway in Toulouse, France, Marc Mimram has completed a large number of civil engineering structures and architectural projects in France and around the world. This book highlights Mimram's distinctive penchant for connecting architecture with the natural world, as well as his profound understanding of the relationship between design and structure. Looking at key themes in Mimram's work over three decades, this volume examines works such as the School of Architecture in Strasbourg and the award-winning Hassan II Bridge in Morocco to show how the architect's elegant and economical designs evolve from an appreciation of the natural or urban landscape of each project.
105971: JODIDIO, PHILIP; RICHTERS, CHRISTIAN; - Ten Years, Realized Works. This book is a celebration of the work of Erick van Egeraat and his firm EEA, over the past 10 years. It includes commercial and residential developments, public and educational buildings, interior design projects, exhibition and product design, presented in the eclectic style that characterises the work of this major force in contemporary European architecture. Often controversial, Erick van Egeraat's work challenges established notions of architectural process, but always with an emphasis on practicality, albeit with a high proportion of 'art', in order to produce an innovative but attractive architecture. Much more than just a digest of completed works, this book includes Erick van Egeraat's own commentary on each project, adding a rare and valuable insight into the processes that engender his work.

The city is noted for many outstanding museums, including the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, Rembrandt House Museum, the Anne Frank House, and its world-class symphony orchestra, the Concertgebouworkest, whose home base is the Concertgebouw. The Marine Etablissement: New Terrain for Central Amsterdam presents the studio of the ninth Yale Edward P. Bass Distinguished Visiting Architecture Fellowship taught by Isaäc Kalisvaart, CEO of MAB Development, with Alexander Garvin, Kevin D. Gray, and Andrei Harwell of the Yale faculty. The studio proposed designs for the Marine Etablissement, Amsterdam's historic closed military installation for over 350 years, which is currently undergoing a plan to open for varied and public uses. The projects show numerous approaches with housing, schools, universities, tech centers, and infrastructural links to the city's core. The book includes an interview with Isaäc Kalisvaart and an introduction by Alexander Garvin, an essay on broad economic environment and financial feasibility of the design proposals by Kevin D. Gray; Erik Go, head of Studio MAB, and Hans-Hugo Smit, Senior Market Analyst at MAB on the nature of collaboration between designers and developers; and Liesbeth Jansen, project director of Marineterrein Amsterdam and Maarten Pedroli of Linkeroeve on the latest developments now occurring there.

108730: KATAYAMA, MASAMICHI. - Wonderwall Case Studies. Works by a Global Interior Design Firm. Masamichi Katayama s Wonderwall studio combines a truly Asian approach to retail with a global outlook that has resulted in worldwide success and influence. Wonderwall s East meets West approach to retail design has produced influential successes like UNIQLO, the Diesel flagship store, and the futuristic innards of Intersect by Lexus. The design house is based in Tokyo, with a scope and inspiration unbound by geographic borders. The bold unconstrained approach brings conventional visual branding into question and infuses new life into existing concepts. A colorful Asian take on retail design and Katayama s admitted obsession with cuboid forms blend to successfully form design spaces that visually display branding. Wonderwall Case Studies gathers these projects for an inside look at what makes their designs succeed.

Bettina Blohm (b. 1961) vividly combines nature and abstraction: In her drawings, she condenses the ever-changing rhythms and structures of landscapes to spontaneous notations; in her paintings, she then transfers these impressions into an abstract syntax to create open compositions in layers of colour full of luminosity, which are evidence of an analysis of both Matisse and Abstract Expressionism. Bettina Blohm moved to New York in 1984, later establishing a second studio in Berlin.

109725: KOPLOWITZ, ALICIA. - De Zurbaran à Rothko. Collection Alicia Koplowitz.

111388: KRONER, SVEN; FUCHS, RUDI; ISMAIL, NADIA; PETRUSA, STAN; - Sven Kroner. The acrylic paintings by the Düsseldorf-based painter Sven Kroner (1973 in Kempten) have an element of longing nourished by memories of things past. At the same time, they also tell of the desire for fateful unpredictability and irrationality. What the viewer often initially reads as the pleasant feeling of an idyll in the style of the old masters, frequently dissolves into an experience imbued with irony and unreality: it is not an airplane that comes down over Kroner’s model railroad-like fir forests, but rather a vessel.

109921: LAFUENTE, MAITE - Knitwear Fashion Design. The Secrets of Drawing Knitted Fabrics and Garments. Knitwear Fashion Design aims to help fashion students to understand the basic design elements in knitwear and learn how illustrate them. Whether handmade or industrially- produced, deconstructive or avant-garde, knitwear has now become a staple collection piece every season and its resurgence as a key fashion item has rekindled a trend and a keen interest in this once very traditional craft. Developments in modern techniques, the revival of traditional craft skills and a new appreciation of couture craftsmanship have put knitwear back into the fashion spotlight. This practical book begins with a thorough exposition of basic yarns and threads, picot, mohair’s, knots, together with a brief description about their structure and illustrations for each example.
107119: LAK, MARTIJN - Tot elkaar veroordeeld.
