Hertzel, Paris,, 1846. 8vo., First Edition, with an engraved frontispiece, title-vignette and very numerous delightful illustrations in the text, very neat calligraphic inscription (in French) on blank preliminary; handsomely bound in mid-nineteenth century green full morocco, sides with triple frame border enclosing elegant floral tools at corners, back gilt extra with five raised bands, bands ruled in gilt, second compartment lettered in gilt, all other compartments elaborately tooled in gilt to a floral design, all edges gilt, doublures richly tooled in gilt, joints lightly rubbed, old and dulled tide-mark at lower outer corner of upper and lower boards (not affecting interior or contents), but a notably bright, clean copy in splendid period binding. With 2pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end. First edition of this popular fable drawn originally from the Ossian-Fingal legends.The author (1808-1880) was the brother and biographer of Alphonse de Musset. The unfortunate mark on the boards are the only flaw in what is otherwise a quite remarkable copy. Very scarce, especially in this condition.
